Melissa Jane Anderson, 97, passed from this life on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at the Madrid Home in Madrid. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, at Iles Funeral Homes, Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel in Madrid. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.

Melissa was born on March 6, 1914 in Ames, Iowa, the oldest of 13 to Walter August and Lida Maureen (Kelly) Swore. In 1929, she was united in marriage to James W. Dalton and they later divorced. In 1951, she married John W. Anderson and he preceded her in death in June of 1982. Melissa was a homemaker all of her life. She was a member of the former Church of God Church in Madrid and enjoyed quilting, crocheting, canning, sewing and cooking. Most of all, Melissa loved spending time with her family.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by six sons, Kenneth A. (Joyce) Dalton of Garden Grove, IA, Russell W. (Wanda) Dalton of Madrid, Ralph E. (Wavely) Dalton of Lady Lake, FL, Alfred B. (June) Dalton of Madrid, Ronald D. (JoAnn) Dalton of Marengo, IA and John C. (Maddy) Anderson also of Madrid; one stepson, Bob (Mona) Anderson of Waukee; one stepdaughter, Betty Levin of Texas; her brother, Larry (Helen) Swore of Burlington, IA; two sisters, Hazel Hight of Warsaw, MO and Edna Metcalf of Macon, MO; and a host of many grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Melissa was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Howard L. Dalton; one stepdaughter; and three brothers and six sisters.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, at the funeral home.
