Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 5, at the Schroeder Funeral Home by the Rev. Martin L. Seltz, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church. "Set Your House in Order" was the subject of the pastor's funeral address, based on 2 Kings 20.1. The hymn was "Rock of Ages," sung by Mrs. Marcus Schroeder and Mrs. Richard Hora.
Pallbearers were Edward Ahrens, Charles Healy, Lawrence McGlynn, John Tietjen, William Toepfer and Raymond Wisecup. Mrs. Ed Ahrens and Mrs. William Toepfer were in charge of flowers. Burial was in the Boone Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Emil George Theodore Ahrens, son of Fred Ahrens and his wife Anna nee' Hubner, was born on May 25, 1889 in Harrison Township. He was baptized on July 21 of the same year by Pastor Dornseif, and confirmed on April 16, 1905 by Paster Von der Au of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. On Dec. 8, 1915 he was joined in marriage to Helen Marie Toepfer by Pastor Erbe. Four children were born to this union, three sons and one daughter.
After farming for a number of years he moved to Boone in Dec. 1945. Here he was engaged in work as a carpenter. A member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Harrison Township, in earlier years, he was received into membership with Trinity Lutheran congregation in the fall of 1947.
Stricken in the early hours of Sunday morning, January 3, he was taken to the Boone County Hospital, where he died at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 9 days.
He is survived by his widow; three sons, Herman, Arnold and Floyd, all of Boone; one daughter, Mrs. Roy (Darlene) Johnson, of Boone; four sisters, Mrs. Charles Hasstedt, Mrs. Alvina Welch, and Mrs. Louis Leininger, all of Boone, and Mrs. Elizabeth Kalvik of Story City; also eleven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, George Ahrens.
