Mary "Dolores" Walter, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2009 at the Boone County Hospital in Boone.
Dolores was 80 years old and was born in Boone on May 13th, 1929 to James Samual and Mary Alice (Buckley) Tilley.
Dolores lived and worked in Ogden, Iowa until joining Bill McBirnie in marriage in 1948. The couple moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1948 and returned to Boone in 1950. Upon returning, Dolores assisted Bill and her father-in-law with building home in the Boone area. Bill and Dolores later divorced.
Dolores met Clair Walter in 1965 and they were united in marriage on August 5th, 1966 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dolores worked as a Nurse's Aide and later as a CNA for 40 years. She worked for the Eastern Star, Ledges Manor and the Ogden Manor nursing homes. Dolores chose not to retire until she was 69 years old. As she always relished the caring and nurturing relationships she made with both residents and coworkers, alike.
Dolores looked forward to gardening each spring, especially flowers, and tending to the birds that she watched from her kitchen window during all seasons. Dolores enjoyed reading books, especially in her retirement years. In earlier years, she reveled in watching her sons participate in sporting events, particularly baseball. She had many friends and was always pleased to entertain them around the kitchen table over coffee. Most of all, Dolores loved her family, immensely, and enjoyed entertaining her family during the holidays and special events.
Dolores is survived by her husband, Clair E. Walter; her son, Michael Stephen McBirnie and her son, Shawn Douglas Walter and his wife, Amy Jane (Nash), all of Boone. Dolores is also survived by her sister, Helen Klinetop of Chicago, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Richard (Cheryl) Tilley and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Roger (Pearl) Larson, both of Boone. She was also blessed with 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, as well as, many nieces and nephews.
Dolores is preceded in death by her parents, her son William "Billy" David McBirnie; her five brothers, Willard, Floyd, DuVerne, Kenneth and Richard Tilley, all formerly of Ogden.
Dolores' wishes were to be cremated. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Marion Street United Methodist Church, 717 West 5th Street in Boone, with the Rev. Jim Barnett officiating. Visitation with the family present will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. to the time of service.
Burial will be in the Bluff Creek Cemetery, Northwest Boone County, Iowa.
Memorials may be given to the family, to be used at their discretion.
