Norman Gene Mondt has gone home to God with Jesus the Christ, Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at the age of 84.
Norman was born to Harry A. and Wilhemina Minnie (Leininger) Mondt on June 1, 1924 at the Eleanor Moore County Hospital in Boone, Iowa. He was raised on his parents farm in Boone County in the Des Moines river valley on the east side of the river. His father, Harry, advised him as he was growing up when he bought a home to buy one with land which would not only give him shelter but also a place to grow his own food. Gene always considered himself a farmer, and bought the home place in 1948. However he always worked at other employment.
Gene was a veteran of WWII Naval Seabees Machine Mate Petty Officer 3C Construction Battalion from 4/14/44 to 2/1/46. He served in the South Pacific: Milani Bay New Guinea, and the Philippines. When he crossed the Equator in 1944, he became a member of the Ancient Order of the Deep. He was awarded the following medals: American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific, Philippine Liberation, Philippine President Citation, and Victory Medal WWII.
Gene married Lovey Mae Budd on June 8th, 1947 at the First United Methodist Church in Boone. In 1971 they purchased a farm in Marcy TWP in Ogden, Iowa.
After the service in 1946, he worked with his brother Loren, in the Mondt Coffee Shop and Hotel, then Halletts Construction. He was the first full time Boone County Civil Defense Director. He was very proud of his Boone County Civil Defense Auxiliary Police Force. He served as State Representative for Iowa with the Regional C.D. conferences. He retired after 21 years in March of 1987.
Gene was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Boone for over 50 years, and a member of the United Methodist Men. Lifetime memberships in Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #817 and American Legion, Post #56. He was a trustee on the board of the Rose Hill Cemetery west of Boone. A Boone high school student member in the Iowa State Guard, and a member of BHS Class of 1943. A member of Magi Chapter #139, Order of the Eastern Star. A member of Mount Olive Lodge #79 AF & AM of Boone and was elected worshipful master in 1966. A past member of the Knights Templar and the Boone County Shrine Club. A past President of the Garfield School, PTA. He was named in the Personalities of the West and Midwest in the 1970-1971 Edition.
Gene's hobbies were horseback riding (past member of the Boone Saddle Club). He enjoyed traveling especially by Amtrak and bus tours. A trip to Germany in 1978 to meet the German Mondts was a highlight in his life. He enjoyed the following: wood working, gardening, motorcycling, fishing, dancing at Lake Robbins, and playing cards in the 12 member Friends Pinochle Club (1951 ? 2009).
Gene was a devoted family man and showed his love to his wife and daughter and grandchildren in many ways that they will remember in their memories. He was very close to his nieces and nephews, and to his many friends. His survivors include his wife, Lovey Mae Mondt married 61 years, of Ogden, Iowa; his daughter, Karen Jean and son-in-law, Randy Johnson of Ogden, Iowa; his grandchildren, Krista (Rasmussen) Olsen of West Des Moines, Iowa and Shane Rasmussen of Los Angeles, California; his great-grandchildren, Dillon Olsen and ReBecca Olsen of West Des Moines, Iowa; his step-grandchildren, Cindy (Johnson) and Lee Judge of Grayville, IL., Michael (Dana) Johnson of Waltonville, IL. and Mary Kay (Johnson) and Troy McNeely of Marshall IL.; his step-great grandchildren, Marcus, Codey, and Taylor; Dylan, and Jeritt; Dalton, Madison, and Katlyn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Earl, Raymond, Francis, Ervine, Omer (Nick) and Loren; his sisters, Fannie, Vera (Rinehart), Harriet (Higgins), Minnie (McPherson-Deardeuff), Bernice (Curry) and Arlie; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dorothy (Budd) Ahrens and Cleo Ahrens.
A celebration of Gene's life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church at 7th & Arden Streets in Boone, with Rev. Phil Webb officiating.
Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, West of Boone. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Boone Veterans Council at the graveside.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 1, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home at 5th & Story Streets in Boone. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Visitation will continue at the church from 9:00 a.m. to the service time at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or the Israel Family Hospice House.
