Karol Louise Reece, age 76, of 634 South Marshall Street in Boone passed away Saturday, April 25, 2009, after a valiant battle with lung cancer.
Karol was born on March 25, 1933, the daughter of Charles and Rose (Nehlsen) Kunz, in Dubuque, Iowa, where she resided in a grand Victorian home near the Fenelon Street Elevator. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and then attended the University of Iowa and the University of Dubuque. This is where she met the love of her life, Daniel Reece. They were married August 29, 1953, in Dubuque. During Dan's tenure in the Army, they were stationed in Frankfurt, Germany where they traveled extensively through Europe. To this union three sons were born, David, Michael, and Timothy. Karol was a homemaker until 1975 when she went to work for the family business, R&W Tire (now R&W Power). She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Circle, Monday Club, V.F.W. Auxiliary, and the Rotary Anns.
Karol was preceded in death by her parents and son David in 1960. She is survived by her husband Dan of 55 years; her sons Michael and his wife Janice of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Tim and his wife Robyn of Boone; her grandchildren: Joshua and his wife Kari Ann of Tucson, Arizona, Rebecca Reece of Palo Alto, California, Suzanne Reece of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Kenton Reece and Landra Reece, both of Boone. Karol is also survived by her brother Donald Kunz and his wife, Edith, and her sister, Mary McBride and her husband Glen, all of Phoenix.
Karol loved auctions and antiques and never attended a garage sale she did not like. She was very proud of each one of her grandchildren and loved them all very much. Karol also enjoyed traveling with her husband, and had especially fond memories of visiting fifteen Caribbean and many European countries. They celebrated their 50th anniversary with a return trip to Germany and Switzerland.
Karol's body has been cremated. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 28, 2009, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall during which time the family will be present to receive friends. Visitation will be followed by a Celebration of Life at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Long time family friend, Rev. Jerry Kramer will officiate. Burial of her cremains will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery at a later date.
