Robert "Bob" Day, age 75, of Spokane, Washington, and formerly of Boone, passed away October 17, 2008, at the Spokane Hospice House after a battle with cancer. His body was cremated and a Memorial Service was held Thursday, October 23, 2008, at Saint Peters Catholic Church in Spokane. His cremains will be laid to rest at a later date in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone.
Robert was born in Story City, Iowa, on July 17, 1933, the son of Earl and Clara (Reinsch) Day, and was one of nine children who helped work a family farm. He grew up in Boone and graduated from Boone High School in 1951. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1952 and served his country honorably for 22 ½ years living in various locations around the nation with his family. His service included deployments to multiple foreign countries, including locations associated with the Korean War, Vietnam War, and The Cuban Missile Crisis. Service in the Vietnam War included a special, recently declassified VO-67 squadron, which was awarded the distinguished Presidential Unit Citation in 2008. Upon his retirement in 1974, he settled in Spokane with his family where he worked for the United States Postal Service until September 1992. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards with family and friends, traveling, attending reunions and gardening, which included refining the art of cultivating tomatoes. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and the Saint Peters Catholic Church in Spokane.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his older brother, Donald. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Helen Day of Spokane; two sons, Brian and Craig Day, both of Washington State and a daughter, Valerie (Charlie) Rhodes of New Mexico; two grandchildren, Corey and Clara Rhodes; a brother Duane (Pat) Day of Yuma, Arizona; six sisters, Katie Otto and Anita Sheehan, both of Boone, Pat (Doug) Markey of Cedar Falls, Janet (John) Cooper of Loudon, Tennessee, Rosalie Back of Spokane, WA, and Marcia (Mike) Schumacher of Chicago, Illinois.
