Shirley Hopkins Calmer, age 72, of 1504-13th Street, died Monday, December 15, 2008, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Her body has been cremated and burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, west of Boone, at a later date.
Friends may call on Friday, December 19, 2008, at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at which time the family will be present to greet friends. An obituary and a prayer will be read at 11:00 a.m. Following the visitation, family and friends are invited to the Moose Lodge, 812-8th Street for a lunch and time of fellowship.
Shirley was born in Boone on June 20, 1936, the daughter of Lowell and Harriett (Lamphere) Hopkins. She married Merlin Calmer in Boone on June 3, 1961. The couple later divorced. Shirley was a homemaker. In earlier years, she did babysitting.
Shirley was an avid doll collector and enjoyed puzzles, spending time with her children, her grandson Kody, and her dog, Tia. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and listening to music by Alan Jackson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Patty Marquand and Nancy Jones.
Shirley is survived by two sons, Kevin Calmer and wife, Jayne and Merlin "Tad" Calmer, Jr. and two daughters, Kim Buck and husband Kelly and Sheila Thompson and husband Chad, all of Boone; three grandchildren, Kody Calmer and Adam and Amanda Pfannes. She is also survived by two brothers, Jimmy Hopkins of Boone and Johnny Hopkins of Colorado and three sisters, Joyce Keith of Colorado, Peggy Jack of Texas, and Lola Sorensen of Boone; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
