Claire Mason, Jr., age 69, of 2009 Tama Street, died December 25, 2008, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines from complications of a stroke. Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Evangelical Free Church with Don Howard officiating. Burial will be in the Mineral Ridge Cemetery in Ridgeport.
Claire was born on March 24, 1939, in Eaton, Colorado, the son of Claire and Beatrice (Walter) Mason. He married Patricia 'Pat' Elsberry in Boone on June 16, 1967. Prior to his marriage, he was involved with overseas construction. Claire owned and operated Mason Concrete Construction in Boone for 20 years. He also was an over the road truck driver. He and his family lived in Casa Grande, Arizona for 18 years where he also worked in the concrete business and drove a semi. Following a health disability in 1994, he spent the summers in his cabin in Pine Strawberry, Arizona and wintered in Yuma, Arizona. Pat joined him on the weekends. Claire loved his four grandsons dearly! He also loved riding his Harley, fishing, playing cards, dancing, boating, and water skiing. He was very patriotic. Claire and Pat enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Mazatlan, Mexico, and throughout the United States. He had many friends wherever he traveled. He and Pat enjoyed remodeling homes in Boone.
Claire is preceded in death by his father and step father, Max Shank. He is survived by his wife, Pat of Boone and two daughters, Sonya Whitfield and husband Steve and Stephanie Hawley and husband Eric, all of Boone; his mother, Beatrice Shank of Boone; four grandsons: Trevor and Nicolas Whitfield and Mason and Trenton Hawley, all of Boone; one sister, Bonnie Lijewski and husband Joe of LaSalle, Illinois; a nephew, Aaron Borton and wife Jean of Nevada and a niece, Victoria Bogenrief and husband Doug of San Antonio, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Friends may call at the First Evangelical Free Church Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The family will be present during this time to receive friends. Visitation continues Tuesday at the Church from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion. Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences and a guestbook are available at www.schroedermemorialchapel.com.
