ANOTHER PIONEER CITIZEN LAYS DOWN HIS STAFF
One by one the pioneers are rapidly joining the ranks of the dead. Now few remain to tell the story of hardships and privations that marked the pathway of the pioneer in his stalwart efforts at home building and to eradicate the wild nature from the soil. Nature itself seemed to protect each step and those who did not waver and with unfaltering gait approached a successful climax of this empire building drama deserve well of their fellow citizens, for many gave up and fell by the wayside unable to cope with the task. But John Godfrey came here to stay and he succeeded to a marked degree, and in departing has left befind him a reputation for honesty and integrity, the equal of the best of men. The thread that bound him to this earth is loosened and the curtain to the great unknown has been drawn aside for his entrance to that uncharted abode of Eternal Joy where God reigns and man may enter.

OBITUARY
John A. Godfrey ws born in Webster county, Iowa, August 28, 1855 and died at St. Joseph Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, Septenber 16, 1920, age 65 years, 2 weeks and 5 days.
The deceased lived for a number of years in his native state and was joined in marriage to Miss Susan Alice Moore, December 28, 1882. To this union six children were born, all of whom are living and were in attendance at the funeral.
For a number of years the family resided at Elk Rapids, Iowa, and in 1886 came to Sheridan county locating on the farm where he continued to reside up until the time of his death.
Mr. Godfrey was a good neighbor and had many warm friends and was an honored and respected citizen.
Besides his wife he leaves six children, George, Guy, James, Mrs. Pearl Weeks and Malinda, of theis county and Mrs. Myrtle Rogers, of St. Francis, Kansas, one brother, Edward Godfrey, of Boone county, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Brown, of Mitchell, Nebraska, also four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the home in charge of Rev. L. E. Humphrey, of Litchfield, Nebraska, an old friend of the deceased. He spoke many kind words of sympathy to the bereaved relatives and friends.
After the services a large funeral cortege made its way to the city of Selden where the body was laid to rest by gentle hands in the Selden cemetery.
