Carolyn E. Grummitt, age 83, most recently of Belmond, IA, formerly of the Arlington, Oelwein, Boone, Clarion, and Ogden, Iowa, areas, died, Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at the Belmond Medical Center with her family at her side following a brief battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Belmond, IA. Father Chris Podasky and Deacon NIck Schmit will be officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Boone, IA. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM Wednesday, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st St. S.E., Belmond and continue from 9:00 am until 9:45 am at the fuenral home preceding the funeral mass on Thursday. There will be a a Parish Rosary Service at 5:00 PM at the funeral home Weds. and Parish Vigil service and time of sharing at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in Carolyn's name may wish to consider the American Cancer Society, or their own choice in leiu of flowers.
Carolyn Eleanor Moore, the daughter of James and Josephine (Maeller) Moore was born March 30, 1924, in Olewein, IA. She lived for a short time in Maynard, IA, before, moving with her family to a farm near Oelwein. She was baptized April 20, 1924, at St. Mary's Catholic Church , Hazelton, IA. Carolyn attended Stanley, IA, area schools and went on to graduate from high school.
On December 1, 1945, Carolyn was united in marriage to Clarence E. Grummitt following his return from military service, by Rev. E.L. Cooney, in Fayette County, IA. Their union was blessed with two sons, James and Dennis, and three daughters, Rita, Diane, and Mary.
Carolyn and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm at Arlington, IA, for 23 years. In addition to assisting her husband with the farming operations, Carolyn was a lifelong home maker, devoted wife, and nurturing mother. She and Clarence strived very hard to instill the values of hardwork, determination, perserverance, and haing a strong faith life in the lives of their children. They made sure that the kids attended catechism at Strawberry Point on a weekly basis and would occassionally reward them with special treats of ice cream on the way home from religious activities and events. The couple also enjoyed following the many atheletic and extra-curricular acttivities of their children when they were growing up.
After 23 years on the dairy farm they sold it and moved into Oelwein for a short time where Clarence worked as a plumber and Carolyn stayed home. During this time they worked on their hotel/motel management certifications and eventually moved to Clarion, IA, where they owned and operated the Evans Kay Motel for 8 years.
Following their retirement the couple moved to Boone for 7 years and became very active in the church there. They then moved to Ogden and resided there for 7 years until Clarence passed away in December of 2000.
Carolyn moved to Belmond in 2000 and had lived there since that time.
In addition to helping on the farm and working with her husband in the Hotel/Motel business, Carolyn had furthered her education in her 50's by taking insurance courses at Eagle Grove, IA, and eventually attaining liscensure to sell insurance in the State of Iowa.
Those who knew Carolyn will remember her as a gentle, yet strong lady who was a very dedicated,.determined, and disciplined person. She was a meticulous seamstress making many clothes for her children and did beautiful handicraft such as quilting. They will remember her wonderful gardens and the delicious bounties it produced such as her rhubarb. Carolyn enjoyed restoring furniture, watching RFD programs on T.V., and special times with family and friends. She had a lifelong love of music and was deligent in making sure that her daughters had the opportunity to learn to play the piano. She and Clarence enjoyed oldtime music and in earlrier years looked forward to an evening of dancing the polka. She enjoyed collecting dolls and the solitude of an evening playing solitaire. Carolyn and Clarence made various trips to see their children and looked forward to excursions to visit her sister in Valders, WI. She had also enjoyed her trip to visit Italy. She was always active in her faith life wherever she lived and in recent years was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, and various quilting groups.
Carolyn is survived by her children, James Grummit and wife Mary, Big Spring, TX, Dennis Grummitt and wife Brenda, Clarion, IA, Rita Anderson and husband Steve, Clarion, IA, Diane Sharry, Virginia Beach, VA, Mary Swenson and husband Dennis, Poplar Bluff, MO,; her siblings, Marion Stieffather, Valders, WI, Burton Moore, Hazelton, IA, Beatrice Phillips and husband Delbert, Jesup, IA, and Joseph Moore and wife Annette, Cedar Rpids, IA; 13 grandchilren, many great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
