Donald Fairchild, age 81, of Boone and the Evangelical Free Church Home, died January 23, 2008, at the Boone County Hospital. Services are Monday, January 28, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall with Pastor Tim Trudeau officiating. Burial will be in the Pilot Mound Cemetery.
Don was born in Boone County on October 26, 1926, the son of George and Daisy (Hinman) Fairchild. He graduated from Boxholm High School in 1946. Don married Faith Helen Ross on January 22, 1954, in Council Bluffs. The couple later divorced. During his lifetime, Don has held numerous jobs, including bell boy at the Holst Hotel in Boone, worker at Priebe and Sons Hatchery, tool machine operator at the John Deere plant in Waterloo, and he delivered groceries for John Munson Grocery in West Boone, retiring in 1988. He enjoyed walking, watching television, going on picnics, and visiting friends and family.
He is survived by three sons, Douglas, Roger, and Michael Fairchild, all of Missouri Valley; five daughters, Rebecca Rieper and husband, Todd of Council Bluffs, Brenda Stone and husband Randy of Boone, Barbara Rieper and husband Mark of Fairbury, Nebraska, Diana Wheeler and husband Jeff of Brush, Colorado, and Melodie Lawrence of Ames; a stepdaughter Helen Johnson and husband Richard of Boone; a sister, Gladys Ahrens of Boone; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Charles, and a stepson, Paul Ross.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall where the family will be present from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Monday from 8:00 a.m. until the 1:30 p.m. service.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
