Vern K. Welch, 74, Holiday Lake, Brooklyn, died Wednesday at his home.
The body has been cremated.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, 503 Story St., Boone, with the Rev. Dr. Ron Franklin officiating. Burial of the cremains with military honors by the Boone Veterans Council will be in Boone Memorial Gardens in Boone.
Friends may call at Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home today from 1 to 2 p.m.
He was born Jan. 24, 1930, in Ogden, the son of Lorenzo and Lena (Ubben) Welch. He married Mary Ione Verchio March 16, 1951, in Boone.
He attended school in Boone and graduated from Boone High School in 1947. He served in the United States Navy from Dec. 21, 1950 to Oct. 19, 1954. He worked as a mechanical repairman for Iowa Electric Light and Power Company in Boone from 1954 to 1984, retiring on March 1, 1986. He worked as a maintenance man at the Eastern Star Masonic Home from 1988 until 1991, when he moved to Holiday Lake.
His hobbies included spending time with his wife, children grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed feeding wildlife and reading.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Jeff and Kathy Welch of Boone, Mark Welch of Holiday Lake and Kevin Welch of Boone; one daughter and son-in-law, Vaughn and Tom Carver of Monmouth, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister and brother-in-law, Iline and Don Westberg of Boone.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Bernard.
Memorials may be given to Grinnell Regional Hospice, 106 Fourth Ave., Grinnell, Iowa 50112.
Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
