Wanda Schroeder 1925-2004

Wanda Schroeder, 78, of the Madrid Home in Madrid and formerly of Boone, died Feb. 14 at the Boone County Hospital of a stroke. A funeral Mass was Wednesday at the Church of the Sacred Heart, with the Rev. Clem Currans officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

She was born in rural Boone County on March 29, 1925, the daughter of Wesley and Odellia (Wirth) Nelson. She graduated from Story City High School in 1943 and in 1946 graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines. On April 12, 1950, she married Richard "Sonny" Schroeder in Boone.

She was a registered nurse at the Boone County Hospital for about 30 years, working in the obstetrics department. Besides her church, she was a member of the Sacred Heart Altar Society and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and reading.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son and infant daughter, and one sister.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry A. and Darcy Schroeder, Paul and Debbie Schroeder and Carl and Robin Schroeder, all of Boone; two daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Jim Bradbury of Iowa City and Mary and Karl Peterson of Des Moines; one brother, John Nelson of Marshalltown; three sisters, Mona Ivis of Boone, Velma Bricker and her husband Duane of Boone and Lucille Thompson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, Steven and Karen Peterson, Paula and Julie Bradbury, Tim and Mikel and Justin 'JP' and Theron and Haley Schroeder; and one great-grandson, Steven Schroeder.

Memorials may be directed to the family to establish a memorial fund in the name of Wanda Schroeder. Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets was in charge of the arrangements.
