William I. Willhoite 1917-2005

William J. Willhoite, 87, of Evanston, Iowa, died Sunday at the Boone County Hospital. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Carson Funeral Home in Dayton. The Rev. Dennis Shepherd will officiate. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Boone.

He was born May 8, 1917, in Moberly, Mo., the son of John and Zula (Burton) Willhoite. He attended Dayton schools and country school in Boone County. He married Bertha Sparks on Feb. 27, 1941, in Boone.

They established their home in Evanston, where they resided all of their married life except for a brief time near Sac City and three years in Missouri. William farmed, worked at the gypsum mills and he had been employed by Fort Dodge Limestone for 19 years until retiring in 1979. He moved to Grandview Health Care Center in Dayton in March of 2000.

He was a member of the Methodist Church in Otho. He enjoyed quilting, making rugs and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bertha Willhoite, a brother Wilbur Willhoite, and a sister Edna Wright. Survivors include a son, Chester Willhoite and his wife Rita of Lehigh; a daughter, Wanda Giovengo and her husband Ben of Mountainair, N.M.; four grandchildren, Sherri Rasmussen, Diane Peterson, David Willhoite and Christy Christian; two great-grandchildren, Mason Peterson and Abigail Rasmussen; two sisters, Artie Simpson of Bandon, Ore., and Alice Fisher of Hot Springs, Ark.; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family. Carson Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
