Ronald "Ron" J. Neely, 50, 1028 Pine St., Boone, died Sunday at his home of complications of cancer. He was born July 5, 1950, in Ames, the son of Clyde "Bill" and Florence "Punk" (Miller) Neely. He married Sandy Stalter May 15, 1971, in Ogden.

He was a 1969 graduate of Boone High School and was a member of the Iowa National Guard from 1969 to 1975. He was a fire fighter for the City of Boone for the past 26 years and had received an award for Outstanding Fire Fighter from the Boone Jaycees in 1995. He was a member of the Iowa firemen's Association, the International Association of Fire Fighters Local No. 678, Adobe slowpitch team, Pheasants Forever and the Hunt and Fish Club. He also was instrumental in the organization and logistics of Pufferbilly Days for the past 23 years.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Survivors include his wife; his parents of Boone; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Cory and Mindy Neely of Boone, and Cody Neely of Boone; one granddaughter, Madison Neely of Boone; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Al and Margie Neely of Mankato, Minn., and Rick and Karen Neely of Boone; his mother- and father-in-law, Guy and Lois Stalter of Ogden; one brother-in-law, Kirby Statler of Boone; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

The body has been cremated.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Clayton Lodge, Camp Hantesa, Ledges State Park, Boone, with the Rev. Dr. Richard Harken officiating. Burial with the presentation of the flag by the Iowa association of Fire Fighters Honor Guard will be in Boone Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call at Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation continues Thursday at Clayton Lodge from 8:30 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be given to the Bliss Cancer Center or to the Israel Family Hospice House.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors of Boone is in charge of arrangements.
