Charles Neff 1903-2001

Charles "Charlie" Neff, 97, formerly of 317 West Fourth St., Boone, died Saturday at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone of respiratory complications. He had been a resident of the home since January of 1998. He was born Feb. 14, 1903, in Galion, Ohio, the son of Charles and Nettie (Tracht) Neff. He married B. Audrey Grueser July 16, 1925, in Covington, Ken.

He was a graduate of Oelwein High School in Oelwein and attended Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. For many years, he and his wife lived in Chicago, Ill., where he was a buyer for Butler Brothers until his retirement in 1968. He then worked as a courier for the Daily Herrald in Arlington Heights, Ill., until he retired from that position. The couple moved to Boone in 1989. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, including one infant sister; one granddaughter; and one grandson. Survivors include his wife; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and George Gottschalk of Nevada, Dolores and Florian Bobek of Tomball, Texas, and Barbara and Robert Ivan of Arlington Heights, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

The body has been cremated and no visitation has been scheduled.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors of Boone is in charge of arrangements.
