S.M. STERRETT, PIONEER, LAID TO FINAL REST

Funeral Service Held At the Residence on Friday, and at the Mineral Ridge Methodist Church

The Deceased was a Charter Member Of the Church and a Staunch and Faithful worker for Many Years. -- Many Relatives survive.

A large number of relatives and friends of the late Samuel M. Sterrett, a pioneer settler in Boone County, gathered at the residence , No 1328 Harrison street on Friday afternoon at 1:15 and at the Mineral Ridge Methodist church at 2 o'clock to pay their final tribute of respect to the deceased.

The service was in charge of the Rev.F.F. Travis, pastor of the First Methodist church. The singers were Mrs. E.S. Foster, Mrs. Undine Hunter, Emil Nelson and the Rev.F.F. Travis. At the home they sang "O Thou, In Whose Presence My soul Takes Delight," and at the church they sang "Rock of Ages," "When Those Golden Bells Shall Ring," and "Have Thine Own Way, Lord."

The pallbearers were Messars Leon Carpenter, Sam Hannum, Clyde wiley, Irve Hannum, Harold Stotts, and Verne Stotts.

His life sketch

Samuel Montogomery Sterrett, the youngest of a family of six children, was born in Tippecano Co. Indiana, Oct 14, 1835, and died at his home in Boone No: 1328 Harrison Street, May 28th 1923, aged 87 years seven months and eight days. His parents, Robert and Margaret Montgomery Sterrett, both Scotch-Irish, died when he was but a child. Being left an orphan he resided with an uncle and others during his boyhood but early in life he started out to make his own living. While on a visit to Boone County in 1858 he was married to Miss Mary Jane Dawkins, a native of Kentucky, who later moved to Indiana and finally to Iowa. They came to Boone County in October, 1865, driving accross the country from Tippecanoe County, Indiana. His wife died in January, 1869, upon the home farm in Dodge Township at the age of 29, leaving three children who still survive, Jennie the wife of John Hannum, Big Sandy, Mont.; Anna the wife of A.T. Carpenter of Dufrost, Manitoba, Canada, and Margaret the wife of J.N. Boucher of Fountian, Colorado.

In 1870 Mr. Sterrett was married to Miss Winnie Baker, who passed to her reward December 9, 1921. To them were born ten children, namely Docia, wife of Herman Stotts of Canby Minn.; May, the wife of Arthur Stotts; Eva Willey, living in Boone; Mabel the wife of Frank Anderson; Clara, the wife of Allan Bowman; Belle, the wife of Arthur Doran; Alex, who married Nellie Nyberg; Lillian and Irene, who are at home. He is also survived by a nephew, Will Shurts of Boone, and three nephews and two nieces of Kansas City, Mo., thirty eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a host of friends.

Mr Sterrett was a charter member of the Mineral Ridge Methodist church were he held his membership at the time of his death. He was not merely a church member, but was a staunch and faithful worker and leader during his active life. Hi was not only liberal and loyal to his church, but he was the friend and supporter of education, and of every good thing for his community.

His departure is regretted not only by his relatives and friends but by many acquaintences wo regarded him as one of the few survivors of the pioneers of theis section of the state.
