Fern Nystrom, 94, a resident of the Eastern Star Masonic Home, Boone, and formerly of 1532 Fifth St., Boone, died Monday at the home of congestive heart failure. She had been a resident of the home since August of 1999. She was born Sept. 17, 1908, in Boone, the daughter of Charles and Rose (Bennett) Pepples. She married Avolt Nystrom Feb. 15, 1928, in Boone.

She served as a nurse's aide at Boone County Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Boone and the American Legion Auxiliary in Boone. Her hobbies included fishing, baking, cooking for her family and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Zoe Robertson; three brothers, Ted Pepples, Leslie Pepples and Marvin Pepples; one son, Robert Nystrom; and one grandson, Randy Nystrom. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Clarence Schwien of Mason City; one son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Helen Nystrom of Norwalk; seven grandchildren, Janeen Eastwood and her husband, Ronald, of Pella; Richards Schwien of Idaho, Sherry Hawn of Cedar Rapids, John Schwien of Des Moines, Michelle Nystrom of Glen Ellyn, IL, Janet Miller of Des Moines and Carol Cox of Des Moines; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Marjorie Pepples of Ames; one sister-in-law, Sharon Nystrom of Surprise, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Norman Haupt officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Friends may call at Stark-Welin Chapel Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Visitation continues Friday at the church from 8:30 a.m. until time of services.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
