Robert Thorngren, 82, Pilot Mound, died Saturday at Boone County Hospital of complications from a stroke. He was born Sept. 20, 1918, in Pilot Mound, the son of Lennes and Carrie (Fredrickson) Thorngren. He married Mildred O. Hanson March 22, 1941, in Pilot Mound.

He was a graduate of the Pilot Mound High School and then attended Boone Junior College. He served his country in the United States Army during WW II, serving in North Africa, Italy, and the European Theatre. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Pilot Mound where he lived and farmed until his retirement. He and his wife had made their home on the Thorngren family farm where he was born since 1948. He belonged to the United Methodist Church in Pilot Mound where he had served on several boards. He also belonged to the Groom-Kimsey American Legion Post No. 16, and was a longtime Pilot Mound school board member. He was a 15-year member of Pilot Mound Male Chorus. He had also served on the Farmers Coop Elevator board in Boxholm and for several years was active on the Don Williams Recreational Area Committee. He raised a wide variety of animals, but his latest passion was raising miniature donkeys. He was an avid golfer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lois Thorngren, and Helen Wulf; and an infant brother. Survivors include his wife; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Mark Thorngren of Worcester, Mass., and Doug and Sandy Thorngren of Oak Park, Calif.; one daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Walter MacNeil of New York, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Andrea, Carrie, Trista, Jessica and James Robert; three great-grandchildren, Carter, Peri and Kyle; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terri Lin Elder officiating. Burial with military graveside rites by the Groom-Kimsey American Legion Post No. 16 of Pilot Mound will be at Lawn Cemetery in Boxholm.

Memorials may be directed to the Pilot Mound United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Carson Funeral Home of Ogden is in charge of arrangements.
