Mildred Wickstrom 1903-2001

Mildred Belle Wickstrom, 97, Boone, died Dec. 30 at Boone County Hospital of heart failure. She was born Sept. 4, 1903, in Boone, the daughter of Albert and Annetta (Bass) Beckett. She married Glenn J. Wickstrom, Oct. 7, 1928, in Boone.

She lived in Boone County all of her life. She graduated from Boone High School in 1920, then attended Des Moines University and Iowa State Teachers College. She followed the profession of teaching for several years, then was employed as the head cook at United Community School for several years. She then was employed as the head cook at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone until her late 70s. She also was a homemaker and was a member of First Baptist Church, Boone, the DeShon Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Magi Chapter No. 139, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Bethpage Shrine No. 17, White Shrine of Jerusalem of Boone. She was active in her church and enjoyed cooking and growing flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1972; one sister, Sue Crouch; and two brothers, Lawrence and Clarence Beckett. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie Lee and Gil Rogers of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; three grandchildren, Cathleen, Christen, and Peter Rogers; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Norman Haupt officiating. The body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine for scientific purposes.

Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church of Boone.

Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, 503 Story St., Boone, is in charge of arrangements.
