Margaret Ruth (McNertney) Dean, 81, formerly of 1527 Mamie Eisenhower Ave., Boone, died Friday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines of complications following heart surgery. She had been a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown since October of 1996. She was born June 6, 1920, in Boone, the daughter of William and Ruth (Gamble) McNertney. She married Ernie Dean in San Francisco, CA, in the early 1960s.
She worked in the record management department for Bechtel Engineering in San Francisco before she and her husband moved to Boone in the late 1970s. She and her husband were active in the V.F.W. and she enjoyed reading, listening to music, sewing, cooking and tending to her garden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in March of this year; and five brothers. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Bob Hill of Walnut Creek, CA; one son, Steven Bell of Seattle, WA; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The body has been cremated and no visitation is scheduled.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown with Dr. Mark Minear officiating. Private burial of the cremains will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone.
Memorials may be given to the Iowa Veterans Home library in care of the Iowa Veterans Home,1301 Summit St., Marshalltown.
