Jack Manford Matthewson, 87, passed from this life on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at the Madrid Home, in Madrid. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service to honor Jack's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, at Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid. Private committal services will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery, south of Madrid.
Jack was born on March 23, 1919 in Des Moines, Iowa to Glenn "Dee" and Gladys Runkle Matthewson. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Des Moines. On June 14, 1940, Jack married Mary Helen Stein, and they made their home in Madrid. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United State Marine Corps. Jack was formerly employed with a carpenters' union, as a floor covering installer for many years, until he retired in 1982. Following his retirement, Jack was employed with Sundberg- Kirkpatrick Funeral Home, as an assistant to Gary Kirkpatrick for nearly 17 years. He was a member of St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and was a founding member of the Woodward Country Club. Jack enjoyed woodworking, playing golf and building model ships. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his son, Richard Matthewson and his wife Marlene of Madrid; two grandchildren, Kelley Martin and her husband Dan of Walford, IA and Kurt Matthewson and his wife Michelle of Madrid; and five great-grandchildren. Jack was preceded in death by his sister at infancy, Jean Matthewson; one son, Thomas Matthewson; his parents; and his wife, Helen Matthewson.
The family will greet friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday, April 15, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
