Olive Kennedy 1903 - 2001

Olive Kennedy, 98, a resident of the Eastern Star Masonic Home, Boone, and formerly of 1026 Hancock Drive, Boone, died Tuesday at the home of congestive heart failure. She had been a resident of the home since August of 1995. She was born March 17, 1903, in Moingona, the daughter of Fernando Wood and Charlotte May (Dutton) Carpenter. She married James Henry Kennedy Nov. 29, 1923 in Moingona.

She attended school in Moingona through the eighth grade and graduated from the Boone Biblical High School in west Boone. She worked at F.M. Ballou department store in Boone from 1920 to 1924. She and her husband moved to Des Moines in 1924 and returned to Moingona in 1942 where they farmed until their retirement. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and she was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Magi Chapter No. 139. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, where she received her 50-year service pin, Bethpage White Shrine No. 17, World War I Auxiliary, Women's Relief Corp (WCR), Boone Garden Club and GAR. She was past Sunday school superintendent of Moingona Community Church and served on the board of the Kate Shelley Historical Society. She was a past leader of the Moingona Merry Mixers 4-H Club, past president of the Boone County PTA and served on the local Moingona PTA. She also was active in the Republican Party.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in March of 1986; two grandchildren, Sandra Kay Kennedy Nunn and Timothy James Kennedy; one daughter-in-law, Janice E. Kennedy; two sisters; and two brothers. Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, James H. Jr. and Vivian Kennedy of Boone, Walter E. and Joyce Kennedy of Yuma, AZ, Raymond D. Kennedy of Boone and William W. and Janaan Kennedy of Chicago, IL; nine grandchildren, Rachelle Darabi, Walter Kennedy, Jeff Kennedy, Bart Kennedy, Todd Kennedy Jana Rae Jones, Kirk Kennedy, Kipp Kennedy and Keric Kennedy; 20 great-grandchildren, Andrea Nunn Quisenberry, Parvani and James Darabi, John and Alexandria Kennedy, Zachary, Joshua, Kaleb and Nathan Kennedy, Corey, Heidi and Ryan Kennedy, Ithica, teara and Gunnar Jones, Billy, Annie and Kathleen Kennedy and Keegan and Macey Jane Kennedy; and one great-great-granddaughter, Karley Kay Quisenberry.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone with the Rev. Robert Stumbo officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Moingona.

Friends may call at Stark-Welin Chapel Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present to receive friends. Visitation continues Thursday at the funeral chapel from 8 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be given to the Eastern Star Masonic Home or the Boone Bibical College.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors of Boone is in charge of arrangements.
