Verlaine Kirkham, 86, formerly of 1805 West Second St., Perry, died Saturday at the Eastern Star Masonic Home, Boone, of congestive heart failure. She had been a resident of the home since February of 1993. She was born Dec. 25, 1913, in Anita, the daughter of Frank and Nell (Hoffman) Dorsey. She married William Wagner Kirkham May 28, 1935, in Rockport, Mo.
She and her husband farmed near Anita for many years before moving to Perry, where she lived until entering the Eastern Star Masonic Home. She was a homemaker and was a volunteer Grey Lady. She also was a 50-plus year member of P.E.O.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in November of 1993; and one brother. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Jerry Hall of Ames, and Sharon and Ray Cron of Des Moines; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Kathy Kirkham of Knoxville, Tenn., and Kent and Janette Kirkham of Springfield, Ill.; four granddaughters; five grandsons; seven great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; one sister and brother-in-law, Denise and Kenneth King of Pleasant Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Eastern Star Masonic Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Cressman officiating. The body will be cremated following the service and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Anita at a later date.
Friends may call at Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., when the family will be present to receive friends. Visitation continues Thursday at the Eastern Star Masonic Home Chapel from 8:30 a.m. until time of service.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
