Alitha Steward, 99, a resident of the Eastern Star Masonic Home, Boone, and formerly of 1307 Aldrich Ave., Boone, died Monday at the home of congestive heart failure. She had been a resident of the home since September of 1980. She was born July 14, 1902, in Molan, SD, the daughter of Peter and Elisabeth (Handel) Orth. She married Lloyd E. Steward March 22, 1933, in Council Bluffs.

She grew up in Menno, SD, and moved to Iowa after her marriage. She was a farm wife until her retirement in the early 1970s. She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Boone, Art Club in Ames and was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Laura Chapter of Ames. She served on the election board for Story County for several years and delivered mail to the residents of the Eastern Star Masonic Home for many years. Her hobbies included knitting and crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in April of 1975; and one brother. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Danna Rae Jacobs of Story City and Arlene and Gerald Hertz of Urbandale; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday at the Eastern Star Masonic Home chapel in Boone with the Rev. Jim Louk officiating. Burial was in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors of Boone was in charge of arrangements.
