Robert "Bob" Swanson, 88, a resident of the Evangelical Free Church Home, Boone, and formerly of 501 State St., Boone, died Friday at the home of cancer. He was born Jan. 18, 1912, in Boone, the son of Charles and Selma (Lindbom) Swanson. He married Elsie Nystrom Oct. 24, 1936, in Omaha, Neb.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Coast Guard. In earlier years he worked in the coal mines of Boone, working for Johnson Coal Mines, and the Grove Coal Mines. He was employed as a mold maker for Quinn Machinery for 40 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the V.F.W., Post No. 817, AARP, and the Marion Street United Methodist Church. His hobbies included reading, watching Chicago Cubs baseball, playing cards, and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three sisters; and two infant brothers. Survivors include one brother, Charles Swanson of Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters, Irene Thies of Boone, Dorothy Haave of Mira Loma, Calif., and Betty Meis of Denver, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Schroeder Memorial Chapel, Sixth and Marshall streets, Boone, with the Rev. Dr. Herbert Foxworthy officiating. Burial with military honors by the Boone Veterans Council will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.
Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel today from 8 a.m. until time of service.
