John A McFarland, the poineer banker of Boone county, was born in Knox county, Ohio, July 8, 1819, and was raised there as a farmer , he remained in his native state until the breaking out the Mexican War and enlisted in the Second Ohio infantry, and served under Morgan and Taylor, in 1848 he came to this state, and in 1849 he settled in Des Moines, where he had a mercantile experience, his object in coing to Boone county was to located lands with the warrant which he received for his services in Mexico, and others which he had purchased, he soon engaged in general merchandise, and was the pioneer merchant of the town and countinued the business for three years, he was induced by the stock-buyers and merchants of the place to engage in the banking business, which he still contiues, he has been prominently identified with boone county since he first came to the county, although no political aspirant, he has ever labored for the promotion of those he considered best to fill the offices, in a busines point his life has been a success, and he is one of the large tax-payers of the county, he was married to Miss Lucina Vance who died, leaving one son; Johnson I , now cashier of the bank
