LEONARD, WALLACE, WISE

Leonard, Capt. G.W., farmer; Sec. 24; P.O. Ogden; was born in Portage county, Ohio, November 15th, 1843, where he resided until he came to this State in 1866; he located in Davenport for three years and then went to De Witt and engaged in the carriage business for three years, when his health failed him and he was obliged to give up his indoor life, and he removed to this county, locating on his present farm of 240 acres; June 20th, 1869, he was united in marriage to Clara Wallace, a native of De Witt, Iowa; in 1871, he went to California for the benefit of his wife's health, but she died a short time after arriving there; her remains were brought to her native place for interment; she left one child: Laura C.; Mr. Leonard took his infant child and went to Ohio, where he remained for five years, during which time he was engaged in the dairying business, and in the winter of 1879 he returned to Boone county; on the 20th of November, 1875, he was married to Rachel Wise, a native of Portage county, Ohio; during the war he was in the First Ohio battery, going out in 1861 as a private; served his country four years and four months; at the close of the war had gained the rank of captain, by hard, earnest work; was in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Murfreesboro, Chicamauga, Lookout Mountain and participated in the Atlanta campaign; at present is quite largely engaged in the dairying business.
