I found an obituary in the Burnet Bulletin for Laban Kirkpatrick, 1852-12 May 1925. He moved to Texas in 1878 and settled there in Llano County with his father John Kirkpatrick and his step-mother Nancy Groves and his sister Minerva. John had married Nancy June 5, 1874. John's first wife and mother of Laban was Samantha Pennell Kirkpatrick. Some census list her as Samantha Pendelton which is incorrect. No mention is made of Melissa, Charlotte or Eddy.
I also found an 1880 census taken in Llano, Texas, which says John age 54, Nancy 53, Laban 28, and Minerva 22. Laban and his father have a freighting business from Austin to Llano.
On February 17, 1880, Laban marries Mattie C. Dennis. They have four children: John R, Alva S. and two daughters, Mrs W.A. Cole and Mrs.. Myrtle Wallace. His sister comes to his funeral as a Mrs. Steele of California. I assume this is Minerva. No mention is ever made of Melissa, Charlotte, or Eddy. I assume that Samantha must have died, sometime before 1878. From the families in Iowa I have obtained pictures of the whole Pennell family with the exception of Samantha, which makes me think she must have died young.
I also found a Charlotte Kirkpatrick who was married to George W. Cyphers who was born in 1841 and died in 1868. Married Charlotte A. Kirkpatrick on July 3, 1874 at Davenport, Scott, Iowa. This could be some relative of John K.
John Kirkpatrick was born in Sinking Springs, Ohio on 27 October, 1823, and died 16 April 1899, Burnet, Texas. He and Samantha were married 05 April, 1849 at Lowell, Jackson, Iowa. It said she died maybe in Lowell, Jackson County, Iowa but no date was given and I am not sure about that either, because the children were born in Blackhawk County. Since there are Pennells buried in Blackhawk County, I assume that maybe Samantha is buried in one of the Pennell lots.
Her mother was Martha Moore Pennell and her Dad was William Pennell. She was the sister of Van Buren Pennell, who lived in that area, near Toledo and Tama. I am really puzzled about what happened to those three children. It doesn't seem like all three of them would have died. It is possible the girls would have been old enough to get married by the time their Dad went to Texas. I suppose a divorce is possible and those three stayed with Samantha, but I have never heard that from anyone.
I surely thank you for writing and maybe you can help me solve this puzzle.
