In Response To: Surname Help (C. Fuller)

Ingram

Charles C. Ingram age 39 b Dresden, Ontario and Ida M. Ingram wife age 33 b. in Ohio and Dau. Mabel E. age 15 born MI appear in Allegan, Allegan, MI in 1900. The entry for Ohio I believe is an error and a common one in my experience. He is a job Printer, briefly township treasurer and IOOF member. A reference on the Allegan Genweb site says he was part owner of an Allegan newspaper until 1905. Nothing was found for these Ingrams in the Michigan state death certificate search 1900-1920. Charles W. Ingram was born in Allegan 25 May 1895 but apparently did not survive to 1900 because he is not recorded as alive and with the family and the entry of children born and children alive is 2 born and 1 alive.
Their marriage is recorded on the Familysearch.org Record search site in Grand Rapids, Kent, MI 13 May 1884. The place of birth of Ida is given as Waterloo, Ionia but I think this could have meant Waterloo, Black Hawk, IA. An entry for Ida Ingram is found in the SW Michigan Obituary Index in Bloomingdale (Leader) but no date is given and no entry was seen for Charles.
Ella and Ida are both found in the Soldiers, Orphans and Indigent Children’s home in Davenport IA on the 1880 census. Ella is listed as employee but I believe it was common for older orphan children to become employees of orphanages. This orphanage is of unknown affiliation but is next door to a Sisters of Charity home.
No trace could be found of Soustean (Soutan) (Sousten) except for a family earlier in West Galena, Jo Daviess, IL which is not so far away. This could be a problem of spelling or transcription error. The source of that name would be interesting. I found an IGI entry but no additional information is available. I suspect a Welsh, Cornish or Dutch source for this name It could be Souden or something like Van Susteren.

Alguire could be Allgeier, Algair or Algur as well.
