John J. Steel, Early-Day Hotel Proprietor, Dies
Ran American House, Located on Present Site of Russell-Lamson.John J. Steel, 78, who was proprietor of the the old American House, early-day hotel located on the site of he present Hotel Russell-Lamson, died at 4 a.m. Thursday at his home, 208 Washington street, of heart disease. He had been ill for several weeks.
Mr. Steel was born April 18, 1858, at Wooster, O., the son of Jacob and Sarah Steel. He was married to Sarah Jane Dull at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Dull, in Orange township by Rev. Elias Miller Dec. 15, 1882.Farmer in Orange.
After farmling in Orange township for 20 years, Steel came to Waterloo and was proprietor of the American House for 20 years. Later he was employed at the Galloway company plant for 15 years as a watchman. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Mrs. Steel died in Waterloo May 1, 1933.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Jacob Fike, Middlebury, Ind.; one nephew, Clayton J. Hoover, 21 First street west.Funeral Saturday.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kistner chapel by Rev. A. P. Blough, pastor of the Church of the Brethren.
Burial will be in the Orange township cemetery.
