Chris Schmitz, 83, of Gilbertville, who died at his home there Sunday of a heart attack, left 90 direct descendants.

Solemn funeral mass was celebrated Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thilgen, of Ossian, cousin of Mrs. Schmitz. He was assisted by Rev. Alfred Schmitz of Lamotte, a nephew, and Rev. W. J. Cremer, Gilbertville.

He was the son of Jacob and Catherine Welter Schmitz, and was born October 11, 1866 in Gilbertville. He farmed south of Gilbertville until his retirement 16 years ago. He was a life-long member of the Immaculate Conception Church.

He married Elizabeth Gutenkauf on October 2, 1895, at Marion, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thilgen, performing the ceremony--his first after ordination.

Surviving are his wife, at home; 10 sons and daughters, Mrs. Peter Schares, La Porte City; Lawrence Schmitz, Rt 3, Waterloo; Joseph Schmitz, Rt 1 Jesup; Mrs. Joseph Delagardelle, Gilbertville; Jacob Schmitz, Rt 1 Jesup; Mrs. Joseph Kayser, Independence; Mrs. William Knipp, Gilbertville; Mrs. Albert Bovy, Rt 4, Waterloo; Chris Schmitz, Jr, and Walter Schmitz, both of Raymond; four brothers, John of Dyersville; Matt and Jacob, both of Gilbertville, and Joseph, Mankato, Minnesota; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Even, Gilbertville; Mrs. Kate Miller, Los Angeles, Cal.; and Mrs. Nick Ambrosy, Independence, and 53 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth, and a son, Raphael, four brothers and a sister.
