Lyle Milton Oberhelman, 85, of rural Plainfield, Iowa, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo from complications of surgery and advanced Alzheimer's disease. Services were held Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Heritage Methodist Church in Waverly, Iowa. He was born January 4, 1917, in Green, Kansas, the son of Lewis and Pearl (Boothe) Oberhelman He graduated from Leonardville High School in Kansas in 1934. On May 5, 1940, he was united in marriage to Florence Toburen in Barnes, Kansas. The couple made their home near Horton, Iowa, where he farmed until he retired, in the mid-'70s. The couple had three daughters, Darlene, Donna and Darlys. Florence passed away on February 8, 1975. He was united in marriage to Judith Dreesman on November 6, 1978 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple remained on the family farm until March 2002 when Lyle's failing health forced him to be placed in Bartels Lutheran Home, and Judith moved to Newton, Iowa, to be near her son and family. Lyle is survived by his wife, Judy of Newton; three daughters, Darlene Wittstock of Waterloo, Donna and Merlyn Gulick of Waverly and Darlys and Les Evans of New Hartford; one grandson, Ryan and his wife Jessica Gulick of Waverly; and one granddaughter, Caitlyn Evans of New Hartford. Lyle is also survived by one stepdaughter, Jan Dreesman of Ames; three stepsons, Tom and Connie Dreesman of Tama, Don Dreesman and his friend Sandy Thomas of Fort Dodge and Mike and Tracy Dreesman of Newton; 12 stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. He also has two sisters, Maxine Howard of Fort Mojave, Arizona, and Ruth Nebergall of Burbank, California; and two brothers, Harvey Oberhelman of Kansas City, Kansas, and Ernest Oberhelman of Woodstock, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence; two sisters, Lucille Knudsen and Alene Wanamaker; and one son-in-law, Fred Wittstock. Lyle will be dearly missed by his wife, his children, stepchildren, grandchildren and stepgrandchildren, and the rest of his large extended family. Donations in his name may be made to the Alzheimer's foundation.
