Lu Verne Chapman, aged 20, a Waterloo freshman student in the Iowa State University, was drowned two miles from Iowa City while shooting the rapids opposite Coraville. His father offered a reward of $1,000 for the recovery of the body.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows his name spelled Lavern and that he was born in 1896 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
