Carol Jean Hope

July 31, 1954 - April 4, 2020

Carol Jean Hope, 65, of Keokuk, Iowa passed away April 4th, 2020, at Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport, IA, following a lengthy battle with pneumonia.

Carol was born July 31st, 1954 in Pueblo, Colorado, to John and Inabelle (Miller) Payne. She demonstrated her lifelong dislike of being patient that night as she was born in her parent’s car on the way to the hospital.

Carol embraced education, graduating from high school in Pueblo before entering higher education earning a BS and an MS in Chemical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, a BS in Pharmacy, an MBS in Pharmacology, and a PhD in Pharmacy from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and a Post-Doctoral Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Utah. She held Fellowships in Medical Informatics at Purdue University/Regenstrief Institute, Indianapolis campus, the University of Utah, Salt Lake City campus, and the Veterans Administration in Salt Lake City.

Additionally, Carol taught Physics and Chemistry at Oral Roberts University, as well as the Community Colleges of Aurora and of Denver. She did clinical research at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, the Rocky Mountain Society for Multiple Sclerosis, the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, as well as many other locations. Carol also worked as a pharmacist as Johns Hopkins Hospital.

As she was working in so many health care settings, Carol legally changed her last name to Hope in 1990. She preferred to be known to her patients and colleagues as Dr. Hope, rather than Dr. Payne, as her biggest desire was to bring hope and healing, rather than pain, to others.

When Carol was more physically able, she enjoyed both tennis and music. The family home included a full-size tennis court in the back yard, allowing extra practice time as Carol played competitively in high school and during her undergraduate days. In fact, she was the force behind creating a tennis team at the Colorado School of Mines. Additionally, Carol shared the family’s love of music, playing clarinet and bassoon in many school and community groups whenever she had the opportunity.

Carol was a loving and caring person, though those of us who knew her well learned she struggled greatly with multiple mental illnesses throughout most of her life. This prevented her from showing that love and functioning comfortably in social situations. Her collection of teddy bears provided her a way to feel and share her love. You didn’t have to talk to Carol very long to understand that she loved God more than anything else and enjoyed sharing that love by leading Bible studies within her community.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, John and Inabelle Payne, as well as her brother, Randy Payne.

She is survived by her Aunt Barbara Meyeraan of Waterloo and was part of a large extended family including cousins, Cim (Molly) Miller, Phoenix, AZ, Keith (Diane) Miller, Coralville, IA, Liane Miller (deceased), Craig (Bobbie) Miller, Rhome, TX, Kevin (Kim) Miller, Hazlet, TX, Vicki (John) Lyons, Lake Elsinore, CA, Scott (Melinda) Kough, Grenada Hills, CA, Darryll (Lynda) Leisinger, Wellington, KS, Darwyn (Bernice) Leisinger, Denver, IA, Warren (Areatha) Leisinger, Mt Vernon, WA, Dennis Leisinger (deceased), Evelyn (Dale) Waack, Cedar Falls, IA, Rosanne (John) Lang, Traer, IA, Mark Meyeraan (deceased), Susan Meyeraan, Waterloo, IA, Steven (Jessica) Meyeraan, Stuttgart, Germany, Laura Miller, Portland, OR, and Martha (Matt) Hoschmiller, Hopkins, MN, as well as countless first cousins, once removed and a rapidly growing generation of first cousins, twice removed. Carol is also survived by very special friends, Stephanie and Brandon Bagley, and their children, of Cedar Hills, UT.

There will be a graveside service for Carol on April 10th in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo, where her ashes will be interred alongside her parents and other members of the Miller family.

A gathering of family and friends will be held in Iowa during the summer where we can celebrate not only Carol’s life, but the lives of everyone in our amazing extended family.

Memorials may be directed to Southeast Iowa Behavioral Healthcare Center, 3140 Plank Road, Keokuk, IA, where Carol most recently lived and was cared for by many kind and thoughtful people.
