Biography

Martin Frank Stallman Jr. 87, of Waterloo, died Saturday, December 21, 2019, at Lakeview Landing of Friendship Village from complications of dementia.

He was born July 18, 1932, to Martha (Schwanke) and Martin Frank Stallman Sr. in Waterloo, Iowa.

He graduated from East High School in 1950 and went to work for WCF&N Railroad that same year. In 1952 he began working for Rath Packing Company, before enlisting the Army in 1953. He served with the Army Medical Services during the Korean War, stationed in Darmstadt, Germany.

Upon his return to Waterloo in 1955, he was again employed by Rath Packing Company. In 1962, he began a 22-year-long career with the Waterloo Police Department, while also working as a security officer at the Waterloo Airport. He retired in 1987.

He was united in marriage to Evalyn Anna Huck of rural La Porte City, Iowa, on June 21, 1964, at Zion Lutheran Church. After Evalyn’s death in 1988, Martin lived his life with long-time companion Elaine Mae Bruns and children, Doug and Jenn Bruns.

Martin’s passion was travel, and he enjoyed sailing the seven seas and visiting all seven continents on his travels. He was an avid photographer and Harley motorcycle rider. He loved his many fishing and hunting trips to Canada with his brother, Marvin.

He was a proud member of the NRA, the Harley Owners Group (HOG), the American Motorcycle Association, the Forty and Eight Fraternal and Charitable Honor Society of American Veterans, the VFW, and American Legion Becker Chapman Post 138 in Waterloo, as well as a supporter of Antique Acres in rural Cedar Falls. His family and friends treasured his encyclopedic knowledge of firearms and motorcycles, his love of puzzles and model cars, and his infectious (and very sly!) sense of humor.

He is survived by a special friend, Elaine Bruns and children, Doug Bruns and Jenn (Brian Knox) Bruns‚ all of Waterloo; and a nephew, Jeff (Andrea) Stallman. nephew-in-law David Carlson of Waverly; great nieces Tara (Brent) Young of Dallas, WI, Kaitlyn (Anthony Heibult) Carlson of Ankeny, and Aubrey (Alex) Streicher of Des Moines great nephew Andrew (Andrea) Stallman of Cedar Falls; great-great niece Zanna Young, and great-great nephew Stellan Young.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evalyn; parents, Martin and Martha; mother- and father-in-law, Anna and Frederick Huck; sister, Marlys Jean Stallman; brother, Marvin Stallman; and three nieces, Jacqueline and Susan Stallman and Cindy Carlson.
