Verla Louise Waugh

Verla Louise Waugh was born on July 11, 1933 in Keosauqua, Iowa to Arthur Francis and Faye Catherine (Livengood) Beggs. She attended school in the area and graduated from Hubbard High School in 1950. Verla met Richard Waugh on a double-blind date and the two were married on November 25, 1951 in Hubbard.

The couple purchased the Hampton Restaurant in 1959, moving their family to Hampton in 1960, and changing the restaurant name to the Skandia Inn. The entire family worked to ensure the business’ success. Verla was involved in the Hampton’s Women’s Sorority and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hampton.

After 29 years in the restaurant business, Verla and Rich closed the restaurant and sold the building, to enjoy retirement. During that time, they enjoyed numerous trips with their motorcoach group, and camping trips to visit family with their pups. Richard died in 2010 after being happily married for 59+ years.

To be near her family, Verla moved to the Cedar Falls Village Cooperative in the Fall of 2013. Shortly thereafter, she met her neighbor, Mel Stabenow. The two were married on December 5, 2015 in Cedar Falls. He also preceded her in death in 2016. Verla enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends. She loved planting flowers, spending time with her family and her beloved puppy “Ziggy”.

Verla Louise Waugh died on May 16, 2019 at the age of 85, at Northcrest Specialty Care in Waterloo, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Richard Waugh; 2nd husband: Melvin Stabenow; her half-sister: Mary; and her brother-in-law: William “Uncle Bill” Waugh.

Verla is survived by her son, Mark (Cathy) Waugh of Emmetsburg; by three daughters: Gloria (David) Nutt of Shawnee, KS; Julie (Kevin) Briden of Waterloo; and Joy (Tom) Brooks of Dysersville; stepsons; Don & Jack Stabenow; 18 grandchildren; and by nine great-grandchildren.
