Carl. W. Bollwinkel, age 86, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died at his home on Friday, December 28, 2018.

He was born on April 5th, 1932 in St. Louis, Missouri to Henry and Irma (Fritz) Bollwinkel. Carl married Steffanie “Stevie” Bauer on July 11, 1959 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Carl graduated from the Lutheran High School in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned his bachelor of science in education at Concordia Teachers College (now Concordia University Chicago) in River Forest, Illinois, his M.S. in botany in 1958 and Ph. D. in botany in 1969, both at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. He taught at Cleveland Lutheran High School in Ohio, and taught and served as the head of the science department at Milwaukee Lutheran High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was employed by McGraw-Hill Book Company as a full-time consultant for the midwest for NSF programs from 1969-1971.

He served as full-time head of the science department for the Community Consolidated School District 15 of Palatine, Illinois from 1971-1979. He held academic positions in biology at Concordia Teachers College, River Forest and in botany at the University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky.

During the summers from 1972 to 1977, he was the NSF leadership specialist at the University of Wisconsin, Superior. He held academic and instructional positions in biology and botany at Harper Community College, at Governors State University in Chicago as professor from 1977-1980, and finally at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, from 1980-2006, where he retired as full professor and graduate faculty member, but continued to serve as director of environmental issues instruction (EII) until 2012.

During his time at UNI he taught at Price Laboratory School, served on the science faculty and taught courses in the biology department. He served as an author, editor, and instructor for the Outlook Environmental Educational program.

Carl was a lifelong member of the National Science Teachers Association, and a fellow of the Iowa Academy of Science, where he served on its board and as editor of the Iowa Science Teachers Journal. He was a longtime member of the Iowa Conservation Education Council and served on its board of directors.

In 1994, Carl received an award of recognition from the Iowa Academy of Science for 12 years of service to the Iowa Science Teachers Journal.

In 2010, he received the Aldo Leopold Award for lifetime achievement in environmental education excellence and leadership from the Iowa Association of Naturalists and Iowa Conservation Education Council, and in 2013 he received the outstanding service award from the Science Teachers Section of the Iowa Academy of Science. Carl authored many documents including successful grant proposals for EII, numerous books and other educational material, including presentations to teachers’ groups in the U.S. and Canada.

Carl is survived by his wife, Steffanie, of Cedar Falls; one daughter, Cindy (Tony) Griggs, and one granddaughter, Christine Griggs, all of Celina, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 4th at 10:30 AM at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls; Rev. Michael Knox will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 3rd, at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls.

Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation Nature Conservatory, and Valley Lutheran High School in Cedar Falls. Online condolences may be left at www.DahlFuneralHome.com.
