Harold Edward Vokoun was born on June 25, 1943, in Hudson, Iowa, son of Edward and Iva (Ehlers) Vokoun. He was raised in the Waterloo area and graduated from Dunkerton High School with the Class of 1961.

Harold was married to Claudia Jean Eldridge on May 16, 1964, and drafted into the United States Army in April of 1967. He served in Vietnam from September of 1967-September of 1968 and returned to Fort Polk, Louisiana where he was a Rifle Instructor. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Karen Garrison.
