Evelyn Rose (Schultz) Ihlenfeldt was born at home on the family farm near New Hampton on July 13, 1927, daughter of Walter and Harriet (Johnston) Schultz. She was raised and attended schools in New Hampton. Following school, Evelyn worked at an overall factory then moved to Waterloo where she waitressed until going to work at Rath Packing Plant.

At Rath, she met Willis Ihlenfeldt and the couple were married on October 17, 1953 in Dubuque, Iowa. Evelyn stayed at home raising their four daughters. She baked delicious pies for her family every Sunday and allowed the girls a late bedtime occasionally when she indulged in her favorite – stove popped popcorn. Once the girls began school, she worked one summer at an ice cream parlor which led to a position at Friendship Village. Evelyn was an activity director and unit secretary during her 20 years of employment.

In 1992, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she retired only after being declared cancer free. Following retirement Evelyn would can and freeze vegetables grown by Willis in his garden, cook and care for grandchildren. She loved reading, crossword puzzles, shopping and clothing. Evelyn was a long-term member at Zion Lutheran Church. She spent nearly the last six years of her life at Ravenwood in her cozy private room.

Evelyn passed away at Ravenwood Specialty Care on Sunday, July 15, 2018, just two days after her 91st birthday.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Willis; three brothers: Walter Arthur, William Lee and Eugene Charles; one sister, Katherine Elaine; and a stepson-in-law, Bill Payton.
