Steven Michael Murphy of Waterloo (55) passed away at home on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born May 15, 1963 in Elkader, son of Michael and Dorothy (Welsh) Murphy. He graduated from Columbus Catholic High School in 1981. Steve married his high school sweetheart, Jane Carr, on August 10, 1985 after completing a degree in finance at Loras College. Steve was an avid musician through high school and college, performing on the alto saxophone.

He got his start in insurance as a claims adjuster for Progressive. Earlier this year he completed a career of over twenty years at Encompass Insurance. As a Sales Education Manager, Steve traveled around the country teaching and was known and loved for his colorful storytelling and sense of humor.

Steve was always generous with his time and talents and volunteered for many local organizations over the years. He was a past treasurer and chair for more than one chapter of Ducks Unlimited; he loved to help organize the parade for My Waterloo Days; and West High’s choir, marching band, and theater department often benefited from his skills and advocacy. Steve was also a past president of the Sunrise Exchange Club.

Boy Scout Troop 1 had a special place in Steve’s heart. While bringing up his sons, both of whom earned the rank of Eagle Scout, Steve spent many weekends and weeks camping in all weathers with the boys and dads of Troop 1. He traveled as a scoutmaster to Philmont Scout Ranch and Boundary Waters with his sons and other scouts. Steve loved to be outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing, or hiking with the many close friends he shared laughs with throughout the years.

More than anything else, Steve was a family man. He worked tirelessly on behalf of his family, and still always had time to care, teach, and laugh. He also always had time to throw his tools in the back of his truck and help anybody who needed a hand.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his devoted wife Jane (Carr) Murphy and his three children, of whom he was exceptionally proud: Kevin, Daniel (Narmina) and Hannah. His special mother-in-law, Donna “The Biddy” Carr. Also, his three siblings, William (Shelley) Murphy, Colleen (Chuck) Knapp, and Cathy (Andy) Mills; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. Lastly,
