Richard Dietl

Richard (Dick) Edward Dietl, 88, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, June 10.

He was born May 31, 1930, in Dunnell, Minnesota, the son of Elvera Christine (Appelquist) Dietl and Francis Joseph Dietl.

He married Beverly Joan Portwine in March 1956. They later divorced. He married Janice (Jan) Geil in 1972. They later divorced.

He graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1948 and earned his BA in English at Luther College in Decorah in 1952. He served for two years in the U.S. Army (Korea). Dick taught English for six years before following his passion for college athletics as sports information director at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. He followed this path to Drake University and West Texas State. He was executive director for the National Rehabilitation Association in Alexandria, Va., and senior editor for The President’s Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities.

Survivors include a son, Rick E. (Patty) Dietl of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Lizanne Stolworthy of Spokane, Wash., and Carrie Ann Sharkey of Waterloo; four grandchildren, David Dietl of Spokane, Wash., Jacob Jensen of Cedar Falls, Karl (Trisha) Dietl of Indianola and Rachel Sharkey of Cedar Falls; a sister, Linda (Richard) MacKenzie of Milwaukie, Ore.; a cousin, Cindy Applequist Sanders of Johnston; and a dear friend, Pat Hilton of Central Point, Ore.

Services: The family is having a private celebration of life at Mr. Dietl’s request.

Dick spent his retirement as an artist, writer and ardent sports fan.
