Eugene Fortune

WATERLOO,IOWA — Eugene D. “Gene” Fortune, 92, of Homosassa, Florida, and formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, May 24, at Superior Residences of Lecanto, Florida.

He was born July 4, 1925, in Webster City, son of Irvin W. and Aleida (Koohlof) Fortune.

Gene served in the Army Air Corp. from 1943-1946. He joined the Waterloo Fire Department in 1946 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1962, to captain specialist in 1966 and to fire marshal in 1981. He also served as deputy state fire marshal before retiring in 1984. Gene was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Waterloo, the Optimist Club and the American Legion.

Survivors: his wife of 75 years, Marian (Fry) Fortune; four children, Dr. Buzz (deceased) and Mary Bigelow of Homosassa, Fla., Rod (Linda deceased) and Shelley Fortune of Homosassa, Fla., Bill and Lana Strein of Castalia, and Dr. Russ and Polly Fortune of La Crosse, Wis.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: three brothers: Marvin, Merrild and Herbert; and a sister, Glendola Gibson.

Interment: will be June 8 at National Veterans Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.

Memorials: may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church, 810 Kimball Ave., Waterloo 50702.

Gene loved his family and would often tell everyone how blessed he felt. He enjoyed watching his sons participate in sports, spending time with family at Holiday Lake, helping his son-in-law on the farm and helping his children in any way he could.
