Lester Norman Knief

Lester Norman Knief was born in Maxfield Township in April 7, 1926, son of Fred and Bertha (Widdel) Knief. He attended the Klinger Lutheran School and graduated from Waverly High School with the Class of 1944. Les worked for Viking Pump, then entered the United States Military serving domestically as a clerk in the Overseas Deployment Services.

Following an honorable discharge, he returned to Waterloo and attended college and worked at various businesses, including Chamberlain Manufacturing and John Deere.

Les met Regina “Jean” Mixdorf at the Electric Park Ballroom and the couple married on May 21, 1950 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Waterloo. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, woodworking, playing cards and golfing – playing his last round of golf at the ripe “young” age of 90 years. He also volunteered at church and Junior Achievement. Les was a member of the American Legion Becker Chapman Post 138 of Waterloo. He and Jean traveled together to Alaska, Germany and Hawaii.

Lester passed away at home on Sunday, March 4, 2018, just one month prior to his 92nd birthday.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, LuVerne Knief; and two sisters, Alvera (Earl) Kirchhoff and Marlys (John) Eick. Les is survived by his wife, Jean; two sons, Jeff (Patty) Knief of Waterloo and Randy Knief of Ames; one daughter, Sharon (Mark) Rasmussen of Ames; three grandchildren: Kristin Franklin of Washington D.C., Michael Franklin of Madison, WI, and Kelsey (Henry) Carlson of Hudson; and one brother, Verlyn Knief of Waverly.
