Obituary for John P. DeLorbe

John Philip DeLorbe, 97, of 632 Home Park Boulevard, died Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at Pinnacle Place Care Center.

He was born November 25, 1920, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of James Montgomery and Margaret Friedl DeLorbe. He married Mary Vivian Powers on June 9, 1945 in Waterloo. She died in 1996.

After attending Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, John served in the United States Army Air Corps, flying 32 missions during World War II.

After the war John assumed leadership of DeLorbe Clothiers which he operated until his retirement in 1982. He was active throughout his career in the business and civic community. John was a Knight of Columbus and life-long member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. John enjoyed athletics throughout his life, playing basketball first at Sacred Heart High School and later at Loras College. He was avid tennis player well into his eighties.

He was preceded in Death by his wife, Vivian; and three sisters: Mary Bernard, Sister Mary Antoinette DeLorbe and Margaret Kobliska.

John is survived by a daughter, Ann Segreto of Des Moines; four sons: John of Waterloo, William of Wilmington, Delaware; James of Washington, D.C.; Thomas of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, February 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Evansdale Amvets Post 31, Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and the U. S. Air Force Honor Guard. Friends may call Sunday from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, Iowa. There will be a 4:00 pm Knights of Columbus rosary.

Memorials: May be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Columbus High School.
