Obituary for Muriel M. Eilers

Muriel M. Eilers, 86, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 30, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

She was born January 17, 1932, in North Platte, Nebraska, daughter of Jerome and Marie Melcher Berg. She married Irvin F. Eilers on October 27, 1952 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waterloo. He died April 9, 2016.

Muriel started her working career as a cosmetologist, graduating from Pitzie’s School of Beauty in Waterloo. Soon thereafter she began her life calling and left cosmetology behind to raise her greatest treasures, her family. In her later years, she and her husband owned and operated motels, apartments and rental houses. Muriel closed her working career with one last adventure by purchasing LeRose Consignment Store and later expanding through the acquisition of Just For Kids & Moms Too in Cedar Falls.

Survivors include a son, Randy (Toni) Eilers of Dunkerton; four daughters: Kim (Robert) Hewitt of Cedar Falls, Sherry (Christian) Kjeld of Waterloo, Shelley (Eric) Smyth of Cedar Rapids and Lisa (Pete) Heideman of Waterloo; 23 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Norman Berg of Bradenton, Florida and Robert Berg of Atlanta, Illinois; two sisters, Joelette Flege of Elk Run Heights and Darlene Mattson of Chantilly, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Michael; a granddaughter, Jessica Eilers; a foster son, Walter; and a foster daughter, Mary.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Finchford Community Bible Church, 10307 Winslow Road, rural Janesville, with burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Raymond. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and at the church for an hour before services on Saturday.
