Sara Akre

The Rev. Sara Beth Akre, 65, died on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at her home in Waterloo, Iowa.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018, at 11:00AM, at Zion Lutheran Church, 800 S. Main St. Dysart, Iowa. The family may be greeted beginning one hour before the service. Her cremains will be returned to her beloved Pacific Northwest at a later date.

Sara was born on April 10, 1952, in Kalispell, Montana, daughter of C.W. “Bill” and Virginia (Fick) Akre. In 1962, her family moved to Battle Ground, Washington. She graduated from Battle Ground High School in 1970 and graduated from Washington State University with a degree in Journalism in 1974. She worked as a newspaper journalist until she felt called to ministry.

In 1981, she graduated from Wartburg Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained in August of that same year. She was proud to serve as a pastor for over 30 years. During her years of parish ministry, she served: First Lutheran Church & Spring Creek Lutheran Church, Watford City, ND; West St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Hayfield, MN & East St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Byron, MN; Galilean Lutheran Church, Ocean Shores, WA; Bethlehem Lutheran Church (interim), Manly, IA; Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, IA; Zion Lutheran Church, Dysart, IA; St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cut Bank, MT; Pella Lutheran Church (interim), Sidney, MT; and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, ND.

She married Gary Johnson in December of 1977. They later divorced.

Sara loved to read, watch movies, and had a special place in her heart for the Pacific Ocean.

She is survived by her children, Garrett Johnson of Waterloo, The Rev. Zachary (Kristin) Johnson of Cedar Rapids, and Jessamyn Johnson of Waterloo; two grandchildren, Katherine and Jonas; her father, C.W. “Bill” (Elaine) Akre of Vancouver, WA; her sister, Cathy (Dan) Johnson of Vancouver, WA; her aunts, Karen Fick of Ronan, MT, and Lorraine Jelle of Bagley, MN; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia (Fick) Akre, and her brother, William “Buck” Akre.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family (c/o Zachary Johnson).
