Obituary for Patrick Eugene Fischels

Patrick E. “Fluff” Fischels, 67, of Gilbertville, died Friday, January 5, at his home of cancer.

He was born September 14, 1950, in Waterloo, the son of Irvin and Helen Flynn Fischels. He married Kathy Brustkern on August 14, 1971 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville.

Pat graduated from Don Bosco High School in 1969. He worked for Youngblut Construction Company and then went to work for John Deere. After retirement from Deere’s he helped several local farmers with field planting and harvesting. He also worked for Hershberger Tiling. He was lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Kathy of Gilbertville; two daughters, DeAnn Wroten of Independence and Shannon (Matt) Kayser of Gilbertville; a son, Damian (Nikki) Fischels of Jesup; five grandchildren, Zachary Kayser of Cedar Falls, Maddy Kayser of Iowa City, Avery, Addison and Annika Fischels all of Jesup; two brothers, John (Nora Lobur) Fischels of Gilbertville and Dave (Peytie) Fischels of Buford, GA; a sister, Sheryl (Steven) Johnson of Cedar Falls; his father and mother-in-law, Peter and Tootie Brustkern of Jesup; two sister-in-law’s, Kristy (Kevin) Hagarty of Jesup and Vicky (Dan) Staebell of Delhi; brother-in-law, Jack (Laurie Brucia) Burstkern of Jesup; several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: his parents; two sister-in-law’s Nancy and Cindy Brustkern in infancy; a great-nephew, Kaiden Staebell.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 10, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial in Sancta Maria Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street where there will be a 3 p.m. rosary and 6 p.m. vigil service. There will not be visitation at the church on Wednesday.

Memorials: may be directed to the Bosco System, St. Athanasius Catholic School System or UnityPoint Hospice.

Pat enjoyed spending time at their cabin at Lake Delhi, playing cards, hunting and fishing. He appreciated time spent with family, friends and children. He was “Grandpa Pat” to many little ones.
