Biography--

Larry Dean Gaede, 74, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at Cedar Valley Hospice House. He was a fighter and battled the many hands that were dealt to him over the years with positive strength, stubbornness and a lot of determination.

Larry was born, July 10, 1943, in Waterloo, Iowa to Vern & Dorothy Gaede. He graduated from East High School in 1961. He married Sherill Dennis, they later divorced. He then married Patty Koehn on November 8, 1969. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War, receiving a Vietnam Campaign Medal. He worked as a meat cutter for 10+ years and retired from John Deere as a machinist after 20 years of service.

Larry was passionate about his faith and was actively involved with First Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He loved working with the youth and attended everything from EWALU camp, to tubing the river, to organizing talent contests. He later became a member at Zion Lutheran Church where he continued to be an active member. He spent 10 years volunteering at Covenant Medical Center fulfilling his need to be useful and his desire to help others. He was also a member of the Black Hawk Street Machines and the Waterloo Eagles Club.

He loved people. He found happiness just being around his family and friends. He loved camping at Jellystone Park and Deerwood Park, classic cars - specifically his prized 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, attending auctions, buying and selling “so called” antiques and garage sales. He loved eagles, Pepsi and always had his trademark toothpick in his mouth. He was a classic himself, definitely one-of-a-kind and he had a way of making you feel special just being in his presence.

Larry is survived by his wife of 48 years, Patty, and his four daughters: Debbie McIllwain of Fisher, AR, Cindy Jo (Stephen) Powell of Waterloo, IA, Cory (Darren) Lucking of Fairbury, NE, and Dawn (Mark) Hansen of Robins, IA. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren: Brynn (Bryan) Kieffer and Brytne (Justin) Crowe, both in Ward, Arkansas, Brice Zeschke, Dustin Zeschke & Paige (Matt) Nieman, all in Waterloo, Iowa, Forrest Sassaman in Cedar Falls, IA, Keegan Clark in Garner, IA, Bart Hansen in Des Moines, IA, and Jack and Eli Hansen, both in Robins, Iowa; and 4 step grandchildren: Ben (Brianne) Powell in New York, NY, Meghan (Chris) Russell and Katie Powell, both in Neptune Beach, FL, and Sean Powell in Chicago, IL. Larry has also been blessed to have 7 great-grandchildren - Kamden, Trey, Sophia, Harper, Vaida, Heidi, and Tenley.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Nikklos, and brother, Ronald, both in infancy.

Larry was blessed with a special angel who came into his life as a caretaker and became his dear friend, Mike Harris-Martin. Also a special thank you to the Cedar Valley Hospice Home for their loving care and support.
