Biography--

Joan Sutula, 85, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and formerly of Aplington, Iowa, died Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Windgrace of Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born April 6, 1932, in Independence, Iowa, daughter of Floyd and Dorothy Olson Luttrell. She married Joseph M. Sutula October 29, 1960 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. Joan graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1950.

She was a homemaker for most of her life. She worked at American Color Corp. & Rath Packing Co. for several years. She was also an author whose work was published in several magazines and other publications, including contributions to numerous Chicken Soup for the Soul books, Women’s Day magazine, and the past 21 editions of Lyrical Iowa.

She was a past member of Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church and Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church. Joan was a strong woman and determined fighter. She was generous and caring and had a great love of animals. She enjoyed traveling, making countless driving trips around the country, as well as a trip to Europe and an Alaskan cruise. Joan greatly enjoyed the friendships she made at organ lessons.

She loved to host gatherings at her home, especially Christmas – which was a big deal every year. She was the matriarch of her family and she loved them all very much, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joan was always supportive of those in need, whether with a helping hand, a ride, or a listening ear. She was an avid journal writer who believed writing things down helped her achieve her goals.
